Why the Enso?

The symbolic Enso dates back to the 6th century, as an illustrative metaphor drawn by Japanese monks looking to capture enlightenment through recognition of the void of the universe.

Most people avoid these deep feelings of emptiness and loneliness, however it is believed that it is only through fully embracing this void and the feelings which accompany it that one can achieve enlightenment and wholeness.

This is meaningful for my practice because part of my therapy includes teaching my clients how to sit with uncomfortable emotions instead of avoiding them, feel them, and relinquish them and move into a place of wholeness

Why Invictus?

Invictus is a Latin term which means “Unconquerable.”

Part of the therapeutic work we will do is redefine your role from victim to warrior/creator. We are not victims anymore to our thoughts, emotions, or environments. We will move into a place of warrior spirit using a wide array of techniques which I have acquired over many years of training, research, and experience. When one takes on the role of the victim there is a lack of acceptance which does not allow for change or growth.

In the warrior or creator role, one will take extreme ownership of their current place of being, which will empower them to make radical strides into growth and change.

Personalized Treatment Strategies

Purpose-driven techniques tailored to your wants and needs.

Complex Trauma Therapy

People suffering from multiple episodes of trauma utilize Complex Trauma Therapy as a means of moving forward.

By creating awareness of the building blocks of self you can address pain beneath the surface and find closure. Through integrating fragmented parts of your personality and aligning them into one you move into a state of wholeness and higher expression of self - shedding harmful behaviors triggered by old defense mechanisms that no longer serve you.

Complex Trauma Therapy can be ideal for people suffering from mild to severe dissociative disorders, such as; Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID), Dissociative Amnesia, Depersonalization/Derealization, and Dissociative Disorder- Not Otherwise Specified (NOS).
Sometimes other types of Trauma Therapy such as EMDR are not enough on their own. Complex Trauma Therapy can be ideal in patients requiring a more in-depth approach to treatment.
Holding a CCTP II level certification means that David has successfully undergone extensive additional training and experience in working with complex trauma. This allows David to work with clients suffering from all forms of trauma and dissociative disorders.

Accelerated Resolution Therapy

Specific traumatic events can have a lasting and devastating impact on your personality and behavior, making daily life, relationships, professional performance and nearly every aspect of life more difficult. Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) gives you the ability to let go of the harmful / negative responses- enabling you to live a freer more present life.

Accelerated Resolution Therapy allows you to address a past trauma in the most unobtrusive way possible and focuses on training the brain to replace negative and old memories with positive and new ones - all while avoiding re-traumatization or speaking directly about painful events from the past.

This modality is a rapid trauma based intervention which uses a combination of bilateral stimulations (eye-movements, vibrations, etc.) and voluntary imagery replacement.
This treatment option helps to let go of negative emotions/beliefs which are held in conjunction with traumatic experiences. Although the knowledge of the trauma remains, the negative side effects will be removed. Most importantly, there is no re-traumatization which occurs due to the fact the client does not need to discuss the traumatic episode.
This intervention was created from EMDR and CPT and has been shown to be highly effectiveness during randomized controlled trials with post combat service members.

Hypnotherapy

Eliminating harmful beliefs and behaviors and creating positive ones is an intense and challenging yet deeply rewarding experience. Hypnotherapy enables you to dive deep into your subconscious to make lasting changes.

Hypnotherapy or Hypnosis can be effective in the treatment of anxiety, stress, phobias, smoking cessation, substance use, sexual disorders, relationship issues, eating disorders, sleep disorders, issues with focus or studying, and other related issues. Hypnosis can also be used to treat medical issues, such as chronic pain. People also see hypnotherapists for age regression and past life regression.

Hypnotherapy is a type of complementary medicine in which hypnosis is used to create a state of focused attention and increased suggestibility. This form of therapy is considered alternative medicine with the purpose of utilizing one’s mind to help reduce or alleviate a variety of issues, such as psychological distress, phobias, and unhealthy, destructive, or dangerous habits (i.e. smoking and/or drinking).
The aim of hypnotherapy is to create a positive change in an individual, while he/she is in a deeper state of consciousness.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

I specialize in CBT techniques such as cognitive restructuring, identifying and reframing maladaptive core/intermediate beliefs to adaptive ones, mindfulness, and exposure therapies (Exposure and Response Prevention for Obsessive Compulsive Disorders, and Thought, In-Vivo, Imaginal, and Interoceptive Exposures for other anxiety based disorders).

Your core beliefs can either frame a confident, productive and accomplished life or can be debilitating and rob you of your ability to live and maintain the life you deserve. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) allows you to identify your negative and intrusive thoughts and beliefs, manage/stop their ability to control your behavior and replaces them with reasonable/positive ones, - altering your perception, and therefore your reality, for the better.

Core beliefs are the way we define ourselves to ourselves - creating what many see as "self-fulling prophecies" or patterns. By replacing harmful core beliefs with adaptive ones, and using positive affirmations, visualization, and corrective actions we can rewrite the narratives of our lives.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a psycho-social intervention that aims to improve mental health. CBT focuses on challenging and changing cognitive distortions and behaviors, improving emotional regulation, and the development of personal coping strategies that target solving current problems.

Through the Beck Institute, I was able to obtain certifications in CBT for Personality Disorders, Depressive disorders, and Anxiety Disorders which includes Social Anxiety Disorder, Panic Disorder, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.

Substance Abuse Therapy

Many people think substance abuse and alcoholism are the problem - however we have come to find out they are a deadly and destructive fix to our deepest pains and problems. People begin to use drugs and alcohol as a social lubricant and release that eventually turns into a main coping mechanism for every aspect of life - transforming a simple release into an all consuming parasite. Substance Abuse Therapy creates awareness to this cyclical process, confronts your inner turmoil and replaces harmful behaviors with healthy coping skills giving you the means to take on life on life's terms.

Substance Abuse Therapy is multi-faceted, taking elements from other treatment strategies to both address our triggers and subsequent coping skills. By those afflicted by both substance abuse and other mental health issues, otherwise known as dual diagnosis, it is important to first stabilize surface level issues created by drug or alcohol dependency and then work on underlying mental and emotional issues.

Having worked in the field of mental health and substance abuse for 10 years David has specific expertise to help clients lift the burdens brought about by addiction.
Substance abuse therapy may also need family involvement if family members are enabling. Working with the family is sometimes just as crucial as with working with the identified client.

Adventure Therapy

All too often, it is difficult for people to implement the changes they talk about during therapy on their own. A lack of social or interpersonal support can render even best behavioral changes difficult to launch. By leaving the comfort of the therapists couch and venturing into new environments we can embody the change we need in the real world with real support.

Adventure Therapy puts treatment coping skills discussed in other treatment methodologies into action - while having some fun and taking part in exciting adventures along the way.

This is a treatment modality which is provided in a group orientation or individually.
This form of therapy is done utilizing experiential activities (low ropes course, high ropes course, kayaking, rock climbing, snorkeling) in order to assist clients in developing more effective communication skills, interpersonal effectiveness skills, problem solving skills, trust, mindfulness, and also more positive emotions like happiness, excitement, thrill in a safe constructive environment.

Imago Therapy

In our most intimate relationships both our most positive as well as our most negative attributes come to life. These behaviors rob us of intimacy, passion, excitement and the connection we need to have a loving, supportive and fulfilling relationship. Imago Therapy addresses the harmful defense mechanisms we learned in childhood from our families, and taking head on we heal individually and as a couple.

Early childhood experiences form our frustrations and struggles in our most important adult relationships. Issues like abandonment, suppression or neglect learned in one's youth can devastate a a marriage or committed relationship - often overshadowing the good feeling we once saw in the people we fell in love with. Imago Therapy enables couples with understanding of our partner's feelings and childhood scars in a move towards a fruitful and conscious relationship.

Imago therapy is a form of couples therapy that focuses on relational counseling that transforms a conflict into an opportunity to grow and heal.
This technique is utilized with couples to enhance communication skills, empathy, validation, reflection, and healing. This technique can be utilized in couples therapy, but does not make up all of what will be worked on in session.

Psychoanalysis

Our behaviors and emotions are surface-level representations of deeper rooted misalignments of our subconscious and ego. Through peeling back the layers of one's mind we can begin to transform unactualized understandings of live from our subconscious to our subconscious mind - embodying a truer self.

The basis of this style of psychotherapy is analyzing in depth thoughts, beliefs, schemas, patterns, perception, and personality. This approach is used for higher functioning clients who are looking for long term therapy and would like to dive into a place of self actualization.

Psychoanalysis is perhaps the most classic framework for psychotherapy developed by Dr. Sigmond Freud, and enhanced by Dr. Carl Jung.
This technique is utilized with couples to enhance communication skills, empathy, validation, reflection, and healing. This technique can be utilized in couples therapy, but does not make up all of what will be worked on in session.

Therapy Services

Customized Care for Individuals, Couples & Families.

Individuals
People come in to therapy for a wide array of reasons and concerns, some of which are trauma, grief/loss, mental health concerns, emotional distress, recurring/intrusive thoughts, phobias, sexual dysfunctions, eating disorders, interpersonal issues, relational issues, educational issues, homicidal/suicidal ideations. Therapy can also be extremely helpful for those who are looking to foster personal/professional growth in order to achieve their highest expression of self. Some are looking for a safe/objective place to talk. Some lose sight of who they are and what their direction is.

Whatever your reasons are for coming into therapy I promise to meet you where you are and provide a safe relaxed atmosphere to help foster a place of discussion, healing, growth, exploration, and trust. What you can expect is an individualized treatment process whereby I will create and implement an effective treatment plan and utilize evidence based interventions to help you work through your current stressors. My hope is that your time in therapy with me will be a place where you can find your best version of yourself and learn to let go of all that no longer serves you in your process of growth.
Couples
My goal in working with couples is to help them work through specific issues by creating a safe environment where each partner can be heard and feel validated and understood. Utilizing a combination of psychoeducation and therapeutic techniques I will help you as a couple work towards achieving your goals. Imago Relationship Therapy provides techniques that aim to foster healing, communication, validation, and empathy. You will learn effective ways of letting go of beliefs, attitudes, and styles which no longer serve you and your loved one.

Relationship counseling can help explore, identify the root issue, and move into a place of resolve and wholeness. Sometimes there can be a gradual decline in intimacy, passion, commitment due to many different factors. You will learn effective ways to communicate with one another, whereby each partner will feel heard, validated, and understood. Also, learning each other's specific love language can better help the relationship to redevelop passion and connection. You will learn how these ineffective beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors have affected the relationship, and begin the process of realignment with one another.
Adolescents
Adolescent years are complex and create the stage for early adulthood. During this time many of our beliefs are beginning shape our perception and outlook on life. If developmental milestones were not met, or were incurred in an unhealthy manner there can be some set backs during adolescent years. Its a time where there is disruption and rebelliousness in the family. Some teens beginning exploring with substances or negative social influences. The decisions one makes as a teen will influence the success for 20s and 30s.

It can be a time of disorientation and discovery. Issues regarding social life, peer pressure, independence, and self-identity may cause uncomfortable feelings and symptoms. As a parent/guardian, speaking about these issues to your teen might be problematic because of the shift in the parent-child relationship. Finding a therapist who is neutral, understanding and empathetic can help bring insight into these issues for both the parent/guardian and the adolescent.
Families
A healthy family system can be a place of love, nurturance, empowerment, and safety. An unhealthy family environment can be a place of frustration, unhealed wounds, communication breakdowns, ineffective roles, and many other issues. A family system is complex and made up of multiple personalities, beliefs, attitudes, desires, and goals. Some issues that affect family relationships are substance abuse, neglect, codependency/enmeshment, mental health related issues, parental issues, trauma, sibling related issues, divorce, unemployment/financial distress, educational issues, and developmental issues.

Getting to a place where each member is able to feel heard, understood, and received can help move the family into a place of wholeness and vitality. Understanding the issues clearly, identifying the roles each member plays, and identifying specific goals for family therapy is what you can expect in the beginning stage of counseling. Identifying specific issues, working through confrontation, and developing cohesiveness is the next stage. Redefining family roles and meaning, healing, resolve, and moving into wholeness take place in the later stages of the family counseling process.
